A WENDOUREE home is under police guard awaiting the arson chemist after a fire that caused considerable damage is being treated as suspicious.

Ballarat CIU Senior Sergeant Dave Hermit said the fire at the Marigold Street premise had destroyed most of the kitchen and bedroom.

He said the fire is believed to have originated from two areas, indicating suspicious circumstances.

Three fire crews attended the unoccupied house at 2.40am on Tuesday where a blaze had engulfed the kitchen and bedroom.

The fire had been spotted by neighbours and was brought under control within 15 minutes.

More to come.
