The man entered the Caltex Safeway service station at the corner of Humffray and Eastwood streets just after 6pm and demanded cash from the attendant.
Armed with a knife, the robber left the service station about 6.15pm with an unspecified amount of cash.
Several police units were involved in an extensive search of CBD streets, which was believed to include inspections of nearby drains.
Police blocked entrances to the petrol station, which was closed during the investigation and search for the armed robber.
The service station attendant was left shaken after the brazen robbery, police said.
Detective Senior Constable Steve Campbell said the employee was distressed by the robbery, but otherwise
unharmed.
Police were last night on the hunt for the offender, described as male, about 180cm tall, of slim build and aged between 25 and 35 years.
They said the offender was wearing a balaclava or stocking mask during the robbery.
“If anyone saw the person, they can contact the Ballarat Police Station or Crime Stoppers,” Detective Senior Constable Steve Campbell said.
He was also calling on a person who claimed to have witnessed the robbery to contact police.
Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
