BALLARAT artist Tarli Glover will launch her latest solo exhibition at the Post Office Gallery on September 5.
Hard Land includes a showcase of Glover's new landscapes on both canvas and paper, revealing a striking departure from the figurative genre that has been the focus of her work for more than two decades.
Selected from a large number of artworks completed over a four-year period, the pieces reference the harshness and often inhospitable nature of the Australian landscape and reflect the results of extreme weather events on natural and built environments.
Glover said the series showed Australia's 10-year drought, the 2009 Victorian bushfires, floods in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria as well as Queensland's Cyclone Yasi.
"The semi-abstracted and fictional compositions are created from a myriad of ideas gleaned from popular media television, magazines, newspapers and the internet," she said.
"The works are filled with a variety of motifs, perspectives and textural interpretations that lead the viewer to relate to them with a sense of familiarity."
She said the feeling of space within the work was distinctly Australian with small detailed images of things we commonly see in times of extreme weather events.
