THERE'S more to the story of Cinderella than living happily ever after and the students of Ballarat Secondary College are going to prove it.
The college's Wendouree campus will next week stage The Truth About Cinderella, to be performed for primary school students over the last week of term with a one night performance for the public.
Producer David Allen said the musical was essentially the story of Cinderella with a couple of twists.
"It's about not having to follow the path chosen for you. It's an empowerment story, not so much about marrying a prince and living happily ever after," he said.
"There's a moral to it. You don't have to follow the script as it were. You can define your own future."
The show will be the first time in 11 years the college has staged a production - the school's last musical was Surprising Old King Cole in 2003.
"It just hadn't been on the agenda for a long time but then another teacher and I decided we needed to do one," Mr Allen said.
"We wanted to do a show that would appeal to a primary-school-aged audience so choosing a well-known story is always a good way to go with younger kids."
More than 20 students from years seven to 10 will perform in the production, with the backstage crew and the band also made up of college students.
Mr Allen said putting on a show was always a challenge, but the students had a great deal of fun.
"The kids have been committed to the rehearsals and they've had a ball," he said.
"Most of them haven't been involved in a stage show before. They've really taken to it and enjoyed the challenge and learnt a lot along the way."
