IT'S almost the weekend and what a big one it will be for soccer in Ballarat.
Some 500 junior players from across the state head to town for the Country Leagues Junior Soccer Championships.
Hosted by the Ballarat and District Soccer Association, the boys' carnival will be held across the weekend and into Monday, with 87 games in under-12, under-13, under-14, under-15 and under-16 divisions.
Matches will be played on pitches at Morshead Park and Pleasant Street Reserve.
It is also a big weekend for Bungaree veteran Amanda Clarke, who will play her 400th game for the Demons on Saturday.
Clarke, a 19-time club best and fairest winner, including six at Central Highlands Netball League level, is a multiple premiership player at the club, where she is currently A and C-grade coach.
The Demons will host Rokewood-Corindhap in the round 10 fixture.
In matches overnight, Germany defeated USA 1-0 as both teams progressed to the round of 16, while Portugal's 2-1 win over Ghana wasn't enough to get it past the group stage. Algeria reached the knockout phase for the first time with a 1-1 draw with Russia and Belgium beat Korea Republic 1-0.
The big news overnight was Australian's Nick Kyrgios' comeback five-set victory over French 13th seed Richard Gasquet on day three at Wimbledon.
