Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the pupil, believed to be 10 years old, was taken to Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital with pelvic and leg injuries.
He was last night in a stable condition.
The incident is believed to have happened at 2.45pm, just as pupils were preparing to leave school early for the coming holiday period.
Police are investigating the incident.
The area out the front of the school on Whitelaw Avenue is a 60 kilometre an hour zone, however a service lane has a 40km/h speed limit.
Lumen Christi Primary School principal Murray Macdonald said the school was concerned for the family and the pupil and were wishing them well.
“We want all of our children to be safe,” he said.
Mr Macdonald said he had raised the issue of the lack of school zone speed limit with the City of Ballarat recently.
The lack of a 40km/h zone on part of the road is a concern of parent Scott Jones who said 60km/h was far too fast for the front of the school.
“Council have reduced parking out the front of the school and parents now have to park out on the road,” he said.
“We need it (the speed limit) reduced and at least a controlled crossing so children can cross the road.
“A lot of parents have been putting complaints into council. We need something done about it and now that someone has been hurt, it needs to be acted on.”
VicRoads regional director Ewen Nevett said if council wished to apply for this section of the road to have its speed limit reduced it would be “favourably considered”.
