There are more than 18,000 handguns registered in the suburb of Collingwood, almost half of all such firearms licensed in Victoria.
FULL COVERAGE:
The surprising statistic is just one of many contained in a Victoria Police list of all firearms registered by postcode.
When asked about this seemingly high number, a Victoria Police spokesperson said the figure was not a mistake and that guns could be licensed to dealers, companies and individual licence holders.
Almost all firearms must be registered with Victoria Police, including handguns, shotguns and semi-automatic firearms.
After Collingwood, the postcodes with the highest combined number of firearms were Dandenong South (more than 18,000), Hoppers Crossing (13,500-plus) and Bendigo (above 7700).
Chadstone in Melbourne’s west is the home of Victoria’s rocket launchers (11), while Dandenong South came up trumps again for the highest number of shotguns (nearly 5000).
The most popular reasons given for holding a firearm license were hunting, primary producer and clay/target shooting.
