The National Portrait Gallery is calling all creative enthusiasts for responses in prose, poetry or performance to the photograph, Winter Time, by Dr Julian Smith as part of its Winter Festival celebrations. Successful contributors will be invited to share or perform their piece at the Winter Festival on Sunday, August 3 from 3 to 4pm. On the day there will be a First Prize and Highly Commended award decided by the honorary judge, Associate Professor Paul Hetherington, Writing, the University of Canberra. Entries close on July 13. BLOG BETTER
Getting the Most Out of Your Blog is an ACT Writers Centre workshop for writers who have a blog already and want to get more out of it. It covers blog stylistics, brainstorming ideas for posts, how to use images on your blog, and audience development. In the second half of the day, participants will work on their blogs and receive individual advice on how to improve them. By the end of the workshop, each participant will walk away with a year-long blog plan, tips to improve their blog design/layout and 50 ideas for blog posts. It's at the ACT Writers Centre workshop room from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, July 19. Cost $125 members, $110 concessional members, $190 non-members (includes 12 months of membership). Saturday, 2.45 for 3pm: At Paperchain Bookstore Manuka, Frances O'Brien's book Dark Side of the Mind will be launched. it is the true story of John, a young schizophrenic man who grew up in Canberra at the time Walter Burley Griffin was designing the lake, and how he and his family dealt with the mental health authorities and his problems.

Thursday, 10am and 1pm: Join award-winning children’s author Stephanie Owen Reeder as she reads from her interactive picture book Dance Like a Pirate at the ABC Shop at the Canberra Centre.
