The Ballarat Cricket Association has offered structured junior training for the first time in an off-season.
About 75 juniors across the five age divisions were selected for the program, which aims to lead into the BCA’s junior representative season.
Players have specialised training in batting, bowling and fielding every second Sunday at Major League Indoor Sports Centre.
BCA junior development officer Neil Davies said the program aimed to smooth transitions between Milo cricket and Twenty20 blast right through to senior cricket ranks, in line with Cricket Victoria initiatives.
“It’s actually very exciting having all the kids turning up in cricket gear mid-winter, keen to play,” Davies said.
“It’s just fantastic.”
Winter training will continue through to August.
Davies said selections for BCA junior representative teams were already well under way. Clubs nominated players at the end of last season in a bid to maximise their time in the programs.
Under-12s up to under-15s play representative matches against the Geelong and Bendigo cricket associations and country week.
BCA under-16s and 17s play in the season-long Kirton Shield competition.
