BALLARAT’S vocally talented youngsters might be getting on in age compared with Mozart, who was five years old when he started composing, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be inspired by his work.

Thirty-six students from Phoenix P-12 Community College and the Ballarat Centre for Music and the Arts (BCMA) will join Opera Australia’s stars on July 17 in a performance at Her Majesty’s Theatre of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
The group will be part of a somewhat experimental production, which will tie Mozart’s music and storyline to an adventurous Indiana Jones-themed story.
BCMA director Paula Heenan said it was a wonderful opportunity for students to experience opera.
“It’s a huge thing, an opportunity these kids wouldn’t have had without this production.
“It’s not because we’re regional, it’s just that not a lot of kids are exposed to opera,” she said.
“They now have a great understanding of who Mozart was, and why we’re still listening to this music from the 1700s.”
Her Majesty’s Theatre’s Jon Harris said the event was a great follow up to the Victorian Opera’s performance of The Magic Pudding, which also welcomed Phoenix students on stage.
