Councillors voted unanimously at Wednesday night’s council meeting to demolish the Midlands and Wendouree kindergartens after council officers found the centres would be too costly to repair.
A new kinder will be built in place of the Midlands Kindergarten while the Wendouree Kindergarten will be demolished to make way for the next stage of works to be undertaken at the Wendouree Children’s Centre.
Both kindergartens were found to have asbestos cement lining some of the walls, ceilings, eaves and electrical switchboards.
The council report also stated that the Wendouree Kindergarten had a long history of being targeted for vandalism and graffiti as it was the only building – with the exception of the public toilets – to be located next to the Weerama Park.
