The series, titled Members Only, is described as an "upstairs/downstairs soap opera set in a private country club."
Mitchell will play a young man from the wrong side of the tracks who becomes entangled with the clubs' owners, the wealthy Holbrooke family.
Mitchell, best known to Australian audiences for his role on Home and Away, has just finished a year on the cancelled US remake of the British science fiction series, The Tomorrow People.
Members Only has been in development for some time with the working title The Club.
It is being produced for the US network ABC, but is a co-production of ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios.
In an unusual move, ABC ordered 13 episodes of the series before it had filmed a pilot.
Such a move is rare, but ABC has done the same thing with the US remake of the Australian drama Secrets & Lies.
The series was created by BAFTA and Oscar nominated writer, Susannah Grant.
Grant is best known for writing the screenplay to the critically acclaimed film Erin Brockovich.
Only a handful of cast for Members Only have been announced, including Breaking Bad's Betsy Brandt, who will play the estranged wife of one of the Holbrooke family sons.
The series will also star Boris Kodjoe (Soul Food), Maria Canals Barrera (Wizards of Waverly Place), Callie Hernandez (From Dusk Till Dawn) and Chris Conroy.
