BALLARAT’S Jason Wasley will return to his hometown for a one-off special concert.
He will perform in the Brown Hill Hall, where he attended kinder around the corner from his family home.
The 43-year-old grew up in Ballarat and studied acting at the then-School of Mines, before his interest grew in opera and he studied at the Victorian College of the Arts.
He now lives in Melbourne, where he continues to perform opera and teach singing.
“My family is still in Brown Hill, but as they get older its harder for them to travel to see me perform,” Wasley said.
Wasley said many people from the Ballarat community had never heard him sing.
“I hope the people who followed me when I was younger can come and some of the younger people from Ballarat’s performing arts community,” he said.
Hoping to spend more time in Ballarat, Wasley is planning one-day vocal coaching sessions in Ballarat with his school The Voice Professional.
He said it had been a very long time since he performed in Ballarat and he was looking forward to the Brown Hill Hall event.
He said there would be a pianist and compere to help him run the show.
Although his expertise is in opera, he will sing mainly classical musical songs.
He first trained under the guidance of Robert Lemke as a 17-year-old, later attending the Victorian College of the Arts and winning the Herald-Sun Aria in 1993, which enabled him to study in Europe.
He studied at Bertrand Russell Institute of Languages in Italy before moving to London and was accepted into the National Opera Studio.
Since Wasley’s return to Australia in 2003, he has performed as a baritone with Melbourne Opera as Papageno in The Magic Flute and Marullo in Rigoletto.
For Oz Opera, he sang Marcello in La boheme and Dancairo in Carmen. For Promac productions, he performed the roles of Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, The Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance and Captain Corcoran in H.M.S. Pinafore.
