Clarendon, which had won seven of the past eight country football titles, suffered a 14-point defeat from Warrnambool’s Emmanuel College in Wednesday’s grand final at Central Reserve, Colac.
The Ballarat boys led the match by one point at three-quarter time, before Emmanuel kicked the only goals of the final term to claim the victory.
Clarendon joint-coach Shaune Moloney said his team had as many inside 50m entries as its rivals but couldn’t capitalise, booting a wayward 4.12.
“We had our chances early and couldn’t convert and they were a bit bigger and stronger and out-muscled us as the game wore on,” Moloney said.
Clarendon was best served down back by Keegan Mason and in the midfield by Matthew Davidson and Adam Johnson. Henry Bennett was the only multiple goal-kicker with two.
The team will now turn its focus to the Ballarat Associated Schools grand final with St Patrick’s College. This game will be played at St Pats at 2.30pm next Wednesday.
