Nick Stevens, 34, is expected to front the Ringwood Magistrates' Court next month for the charges that reportedly relate to an ex-partner.
Police are believed to have interviewed Stevens after a complaint was made and he denied the claims against him.
Stevens told News Corp the allegations were not true and he would fight them in court.
"The whole thing is 150 per cent false," he said.
"I wish I could go into it more. I have done the right thing and being slammed for it, I can tell you I have done absolutely nothing wrong."
Stevens played 231 AFL games for Carlton and Port Adelaide before his retirement in 2009 after a neck injury.
He is now the coach at the Glenelg Football Club in Adelaide.
