FROSTY the Snowman could be lingering around Mt Buninyong and surrounding hills as snow after snow fell at Mount Helen on Thursday evening.
The region is expected to receive snow below 600 metres with a slight chance it will fall on the city as a cold front approaches.
It is expected to reach a top of eight degrees.
Weatherzone meteorolgist Brett Dutschke said the snow would most likely fall between 7pm and sunrise.
He said there was a slight chance the snow would fall on the city, but was unlikely to settle.
"I doubt it will fall on the city, but it will be the best chance this winter. It's the coldest air mass we've seen this winter," he said.
He said it had been the coldest four weeks Ballarat had experienced since 2004.
"Ballarat is having its coldest July since 1998, if the second half is as cold as the first half. However, the second half is looking to warm up ," Mr Dutschke said.
"It is unusually cold, about a degree below the average maximum.
"Best chance for snow is for tonight, although some could fall today."
