Frank Ford Travel Scene Ballarat travel manager Hayden Gercovich said news of the Malaysia Airlines plane being shot down in eastern Ukraine would not significantly impact the local travel industry.
"It puts a dampener on the industry," Mr Gercovich said.
"But I don't think, in my mind, it will stop people from travelling overseas."
Mr Gercovich said his business had not been directly impacted by the latest event.
"We do have (customers) who have been travelling with Malaysia Airlines," he said.
Mr Gercovich said Malaysia Airlines was an economic carrier option for some Ballarat travellers.
"I think people are much more aware of the danger that can go on when travelling overseas," Mr Gercovich said.
He said Frank Ford Travel Scene Ballarat's business slowed following the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
"It was a traumatic and shocking time for the industry," he said.
Mr Gercovich said winter was the busiest season for his travel agency.
"This is the time of the year that people do travel overseas and get away from cold Ballarat," he said.
