The road, which is full of corrugations and potholes, wears out tires and plays havoc with suspension for those who use it regularly.
“I’m up and down it five to seven times a week, and it can’t be good for the car, besides all the safety issues,” said Enfield resident Kim Kucera.
Timber trucks thunder up the road, which also lacks a proper shoulder, and there have been several rollovers in recent years as they tumble off the road on tight corners.
Ms Kucera said as well as improving the surface, the turn-offs needed to be improved.
“Turning into our block, we’ve got 100 metres at most to slow down and get round the corner. They’ve got double that down the road, and you can tell the difference in the road quality,” she said.
VicRoads regional director William Tieppo said in a statement they took the surface issues on the road seriously.
“VicRoads regularly inspects the arterial road network to ensure all roads are in a safe condition, with Colac-Ballarat Road inspected fortnightly,” he said.
Ballarat Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Pat Cleary said it was important people kept aware of road conditions.
“Along with all our country roads, people should drive to the conditions of the road and surrounding environment,” he said.
