The AFL Goldfields Region Independent Tribunal suspended Edwards for one match on Tuesday night.
He pleaded guilty to forceful head-high contact on Ballarat’s James Meade at Alfredton on Sunday.
Edwards was reported and given a yellow card on the day.
The tribunal took into account Edwards' guilty plea and his good playing record in determining a penalty.
This is only the second time Edwards has been suspended in a decorated career, which features four BFL best and fairest awards and string of four premierships with Redan.
He took a one-match set penalty after the 2009 grand final.
Edwards joined North Ballarat City and has played six games.
North sits on top of the ladder with 11 wins in 12 outings - one win ahead of Redan.
When they last met in round one, North Ballarat City crushed Redan - 20.9 (129) to 7.11 (53)
