Both Ms Knight and Mr Howard released statements of sympathy for the victims and those close to them.
“I know many Ballarat residents will want to share their support and sympathy with victims of MH17,” said Mr Howard.
“In times of grief it is important we come together to show our support for those who have lost friends and family,” said Ms Knight.
There were 18 Victorians on the Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur flight that was shot down over Ukraine last week, including a couple from Sunbury who were involved in the Ballarat Football League.
Ballarat mayor Joshua Morris, who oversaw a minute’s silence at Wednesday night’s council meeting, acknowledged the broad range of people affected by the disaster.
“This awful tragedy has touched the lives of families and communities across our country and indeed across the globe,” he said.
“I encourage Ballarat residents to leave a message of condolence for those families affected by this event.”
Books will also be available in Moorabool Council offices, as part of the statewide tribute announced by Premier Denis Napthine at the weekend.
