The Bureau of Meteorology warned wind speeds could reach 110 kilometres an hour in Ballarat and up to 140km/h in alpine areas, as a cold front moves across the state from south of the Bight.
The State Emergency Service (SES) is bracing itself for building damage, fallen trees and branches and dangerous road conditions.
The SES has urged residents to stay indoors and away from windows, keep clear of fallen trees and power lines and be prepared for power outages.
It has also suggested items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines be safely secured.
Ballarat will remain windy until Friday afternoon, with gusts of around 40km/h expected.
For flood or storm emergency assistance from the SES call 132 500.
