Students from Ballarat High School and Ballarat-Clarendon College know the answers after testing their investigations at Federation University on Wednesday.
The year 7 and 9 students were taking part in a science project called Science and Engineering Investigation Awards as part of National Science Week.
The awards were eventually won by two Clarendon students who tested whether compression garments improved athletic performance.
FedUni science education officer Jessica Sautner said it was great program to get young people more interested in science.
“Science is about coming up with ideas and testing them,” she said. “I’ve gone out (to the schools) to see how they’re progressing. They’ve done a great job the whole way.”
Students also had the opportunity to fire a rocket outside the university’s new science building, which saw the 25 centimetre-long missile go up in a straight line and fall back to the group of 20 students waiting below.
Luckily, the cardboard rocket was successfully dodged by all involved.
