Dr Wright’s 2013 book The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka outlines the role women played in the 1854 revolt against the gold commissioners.
“The plaque outside acknowledges men and women died at the event, for the first time in 160 years. To have women’s involvement acknowledged is immensely satisfying,” she said.
Dr Wright will speak at M.A.D.E as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival program.
“I love writers’ festivals, because this is the time you get to engage with your readers. There are no writers without readers, and at these you can engage on a more social level,” she said.
Also speaking at the event are former Greens leader Bob Brown and Tecoma anti-McDonald’s advocate Garry Muratore.
Dr Brown will talk about optimism, the topic and title of his recent book.
The festival will also see economist and former diplomat Ross Garnaut talk about the challenges Australia will face in the next decade, Jackie French will talk about writing for children and a workshop for budding writers will be held on both days
with authors Gabrielle Wang and Nicholas Brasch.
