Larkham has also backed Dan McKellar to become one of the competition's best forwards coaches, promoting him to the job as part of a new-look Brumbies coaching line-up.

Larkham finalised his coaching structure for the 2015 Super Rugby season by promoting Dan McKellar to forwards coach on a two-year deal, recruiting cross-code pioneer Peter Ryan as collision coach and adding former Wallaby Dan Palmer as the scrum consultant.

McKellar will be filling the hole left by Laurie Fisher, who was regarded by many as the best forwards coach in the world.

But while McKellar and Palmer will work together with the forwards, Larkham is the head coach and back-line mentor.

To ensure Larkham isn't spread across too many roles, the champion Wallabies flyhalf has backed senior players including Matt Toomua and Christian Lealiifano to assist with game plans.

The Brumbies boast Wallabies talent in every back line position.

"Some of the guys will have to take more responsibility for their own preparation next year," Larkham said.

"We've got a couple of guys in the back line who are quite experienced now and they'll be taking some responsibility in regards to how we play.

"Sometimes it's a difficult transition between giving them the structure to giving them control. We don't want to go from one extreme to the other, but we made a good transition this year and we want to make sure we step it up again."

McKellar has taken the reins of the Canberra Vikings National Rugby Championship team and will take charge of the Brumbies' forwards when the Super Rugby pre-season begins in November.

The former Queensland prop was in charge of defence and the Brumbies' set piece this year as part of the Larkham-Fisher co-coaching structure.

But with Fisher joining English club Gloucester, McKellar will take on more tasks as the Brumbies attempt to end an 11-year title drought.

Larkham is confident he has the staff in place to chase a championship.

"Dan will be in charge of individual forwards reviews, forwards attack, defence, the scrum and the lineout and attitude," Larkham said.

"I think the staff we've got complement each other really well, there's experience and a lot of knowledge.

"Dan's a very, very good coach. Dan's coaching developed this year, he's got a good understanding of our game and our players so that's why he'll fill the position well.

"We're in good shape, it's a matter of making sure the players are on the same page. To make sure the message is clear is a challenge every year."

Palmer played for the Wallabies just two years ago, but the 25-year-old has retired after a 12-month stint in France.

The Brumbies and Canberra Vikings will use his scrum expertise to ensure they have a strong set piece.

The Vikings will play the Greater Sydney Rams on Thursday night after their shock round-one NRC loss to the Perth Spirit on Saturday.

McKellar was fuming with his team's effort in a lacklustre five-point defeat and wants an immediate attitude adjustment.

"Our work at the breakdown and connection was pretty average," McKellar said.

"I can't pinpoint why we were flat, our preparation was good. We have got to sort out quickly and we have to get one back ... the big thing is our work off the ball in defence and attack wasn't where it needed to be."
