The man, 50, and boy, eight, were alerted by a smoke alarm to the fire at an Eganstown miners cottage.
Eight fire crews were called to the Old Main Road address at 2.30am to find the house fully engulfed in flames.
It is believed the fire started when a log fell out of a wood fire.
The blaze was brought under control at 3.20am, but the house was destroyed.
A fire investigator was at the scene on Wednesday.
