VWFL: Golden Point Dragons line up in grand final

INAUGURAL Golden Point women's football team is one step from claiming a premiership cup.

The Dragons are guaranteed promotion in Victorian Women's Football League ranks next season, now they are in the division four grand final.

They are determined to reinforce their presence in the restructured VWFL by staking a coveted cup.

The Dragons pieced together a team from Ballarat youth girls graduates, soccer players and basketballers to test out women's state league football.

Dragons captain Shannon Alexander said the team has improved throughout the season and could hardly wait to play for a flag.

"Ballarat has a very good youth girls teams it a big league and growing in numbers," Alexander said.

"We started the season with only 12 or 13 players and thankfully grew during pre-season so we had enough for a team."

Alexander, a former Lake Wendouree youth girls footballer, said the step up to women's football was a challenge.

Play was faster, players were older and the bodies on the field were bigger.

But Point adjusted and was ready for a final.

The Dragons entered the season in a combined division three and four competition that split in half for finals the top four teams on the ladder in division three, the top four teams of the second half in division four.

Under the restructure, divisions will officially split next season.

Dragons players quickly caught selectors attention.

Alexander, Ash Wilkes and star onballer Maighan Fogas played Vic Country under-21 representative football. Abby Cummins lined up in Country's under-18s.

Alexander said her team looked forward to playing on a Victorian Football League ground at Coburg in a triple-header with the division three and five finals.

Redan launched a team into VWFL division two and reached the semi-finals.
