The empty space the Buninyong Mt Helen Lions Club was using to sell books has been sold. 

Bookshop volunteer Irene Jolly said they were aware the building was on the market and would not be a permanent home.

“We knew we weren’t going to be in there forever, but the news did hit us with a big crunch that it had been sold,” Ms Jolly said.

The store has been operating out of the shop front for three years, selling donated books with the proceeds going straight back into the community.

The funds have helped supply play equipment and shades for local primary schools, assisted people with gardening, wood or petrol to get to Melbourne if they could not afford it, as well as supporting others in need.

“It’s a meeting place for the community,” Ms Jolly said.

“We just ask people how they are and if we can help.”

The group had to move out of the store two weeks ago. Ms Jolly said they had about 7000 books in storage from the store and estimates they would have sold anywhere between 20,000 and 30,000 books over the three years.

“Some people came in and bought 20 or 30 books in one go,” she said.

Ross Gillard and Helen Slater also volunteered time assisting in the shop.

Mr Gillard said the shop became a part of people’s rhythm in Buninyong’s village. Ms Slater said they did not expect the same generosity, but someone might have an idea of where they could now set up their bookshop.

“We’re welcoming any ideas, as we may not have thought of them,” Ms Slater said.
