The 12-month campaign will focus on the Moorabool area, as well as the Macedon Ranges and along the Surf Coast. According to Victoria Police these areas gain a higher number of motorcyclists and four-wheel drive enthusiasts and also see a high number of accidents with serious injuries.

A total of 139 vehicles were checked in the Moorabool region at the weekend.

Inspector Michael Baker said it was important people remembered vehicles still needed to be registered and roadworthy when driving on unsealed roads.

"Considering the dangerous terrain, it is really concerning that we found a combined total of 10 motorbikes and four-wheel drives that failed a roadworthy check," he said.

"The chances of suffering a serious injury are already high when you are doing everything right out there, let alone when your vehicle isn't up to it."

Anyone who plans to be driving off-road is urged to let others know where they are going, take a first aid kit and extra supplies in case an accident leaves them stranded.
