Benjamin Day faced an out of sessions court hearing on Sunday and was charged with intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury.
The 32-year-old woman was a guest at a house party on the corner of Barondi Avenue and Evelyn Court, Narre Warren, between 12.30am and 1am on Sunday.
Police believe the woman and Day - who know each other – were walking along Madison Avenue, near the corner of Josephine Avenue, when she was assaulted.
The woman suffered serious upper body injuries and remains in The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.
Mr Day appeared briefly before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday and was remanded in custody to return to court on December 8.
