Representing himself, Nathan Rosenow, 26, on Tuesday told magistrate Ann Collins it was his son's birthday and he deserved bail because he had "been really good".
Ms Collins refused his application and said she was concerned Rosenow would reoffend if released, due to continued drug and alcohol use.
Opposing bail, a Ballarat police constable told the court Rosenow was recently picked up on a warrant after failing to attend court on September 1.
The officer said Rosenow had previously been arrested on August 13 and charged with a string of offences, including 12 counts of theft from a motor car, two of theft of a motor car, five of obtaining property by deception, theft and handling stolen goods.
The court heard Rosenow began his alleged crime spree in late July, targeting unlocked cars around Ballarat and stealing whatever he could get his hands on.
On several occasions he allegedly stole credit cards and used them to buy food and petrol. He is also alleged to have stolen two cars.
The police constable said Rosenow had a lengthy criminal history and eight prior convictions for failing to answer bail.
In his defence, Rosenow said he had been struggling since a recent relationship break-up, but had "been really good" with his sister's help.
He also said it was his son's birthday on Tuesday and he wanted to be there for him.
Ms Collins said she was reluctant to release Rosenow without adequate support in place for his drug and alcohol use.
Rosenow will reappear on November 13 for a further mention hearing.
