Master crystal sculptor Fred Curtis met more than 50 people at Thomas Jewellers in Sturt Street to celebrate the Waterford brand of crystal.
Mr Curtis, who has designed a broach for Queen Elizabeth and American baseball’s World Series Trophy, gave a sculpting demonstration and signed valuable
items during his visit to Ballarat on Monday.
“People love the shine and sparkle of it (crystal),” said Mr Curtis, who started his trade in Waterford in 1971 after
walking off the street and taking a summer job.
“Men, more than women, are our biggest collectors these days.”
Steve Watts and his wife Barbara travelled from Maldon for the event.
“Crystal is a very old item that goes back many years and can be passed on from generation to generation,” Mrs Watts said.
Ballarat’s Verna Jolly said “everyone likes a bit of nice stuff” and suggested crystal looked nice, especially in the cabinet.
