It could mean wearing a tuxedo, but equally it could mean a sarong or cheongsam, or even a kilt.
The BRMC will host its annual gala on October 4, at the Princes Room, Craig's Royal Hotel.
It is black tie and long or cocktail dress in the sense it is strictly formal but BRMC fundraising coordinator Georgina Vagg said strictly formal meant different things to different multicultural groups.
"The black tie for men is the standard but especially with women we'd love to see people wearing their national costume. That's what the Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council is all about," she said.
"It is a major fundraiser for the council. The money goes towards buying equipment for multicultural groups and for assisting their programs.
"We're hoping for 100 people and we're excited about having the ball at Craig's Royal Hotel because it is an iconic venue in Ballarat."
Ms Vagg said guests would include Victorian Multicultural Council chairman Chin Tan, Eddie Micallef from the Ethnic Community Council of Victoria, and Dr Graham Dietrich representing the Gippsland Ethnic Community Council.
Ballarat musicians Barry Currie, Graeme Vendy and Daryl Eastcott will perform on the night while Tony Chew is the guest performer.
BRMC volunteer Annie Hamilton said the organisation was hoping to use the black tie ball as a launch pad to become more active next year.
Ticket prices are $80 including a two-course dinner and complimentary red and white wine.
