The bakery staple has taken out the Great Aussie Sausage Roll prize.
The competition was held for the first time in conjunction with the Great Aussie Pie Competition, in which Sovereign Hill’s Hope Bakery also won two medals.
Baker Michael Pace said the oven gave the bakery an edge over the competition.
“It gives it a whole new flavour. It tastes more organic, more natural,” he said.
“We also use all-natural sauces.”
The Hope Bakery sold anywhere between 80 and 280 sausage rolls a day, Mr Pace said.
“On that big day during the school holidays (when 280 were sold) we realised we’d better get another batch going, and sold them almost right out of the oven,” he said.
The sausage rolls were judged hot and cold on their appearance, the content and flavour of the filling, the pastry and uniformity of all the rolls submitted.
Sovereign Hill offers 15-minute shopping passes for people who want to pop in to try the bakery’s delights.
Hope Bakery also received awards for its pies, taking out two medals in the plain mince and red meat categories.
