Brett McCluskey starred on the night by claiming the WKA Middleweight Full Thai Rules belt at Ballarat Lodge.
McCluskey outpointed Daniel Soeurream in a tight decision over five rounds. The 19-year-old entered the bout as a “real underdog”, according to Barbarian head trainer Dave Ashmore.
“Soeurream is one of the best middleweights in his class,” Ashmore said. “He stuck to the game plan well –we were working long kicks and fighting with elbows and knees in tight.
“Both fighters were very aggressive, but Brett managed to sneak in a few shots in the last round that resulted in a standing eight count.”
Nick Taylor, David Taminika and Michael Krul also won by unanimous points decisions, leaving Barbarian’s record for the year at 18-1.
Ashmore says the aftermath of Gold Rush III has seen the gym already approached by two promoters looking for interstate matches.
A big end to the year beckons for Barbarian, with Krul set to contest the IKBF Welterweight Full-Thai Rules belt at Sunshine in October.
Meanwhile, Ashmore will take a team of four to Darwin for a series of pro-am bouts in November.
The Gold Rush III night was promoted by MC2, the company of world champion kickboxer Steve Moxon. The main event saw former Clunes fighter Pat Richards knocked out by Rhyse Saliba in the third round.
