The new boss of the players union, Paul Marsh, has also successfully pushed for another seat on the Laws of The Game Committee which is expected to be filled by his executive Ian Prendergast.

"The players care deeply about the laws of the game," Marsh said.

"They see it as fundamental ... This is not about creating conflict or competing, we see this as nothing more than assisting.

It's come as a result of a discussion we've had about how we can add value to the process."

Marsh put the proposal in recent days to AFL football boss Mark Evans and received a positive response. The league will hold a laws summit in early October. Melbourne's Jack Trengove recently replaced West Coast's Beau Waters on the laws committee but the view of the players is that a more collective approach is also required.

"Our role is to represent the views of the entire playing group," Marsh told Fairfax Media.

"The danger in having one player is that they at times could find themselves representing their own views or their club's and not the views of the whole. It's not fair to expect them to have the tools to do that."

The AFLPA has been critical in recent years of rule changes related to the restrictions around player interchange and, like most AFL coaches, frustrated with the substitute rule.

Evans has insisted the league remains unwilling to make any rule changes around player interchange until the end of the 2015 season, recently advising the coaches that he would look at removing the substitute only if they were prepared to further reduce the cap on interchange rotations.

Marsh has also met the AFL's executive in charge of the fixture Simon Lethlean with growing disenchantment over suggestions the competition will stick with one bye in future.

The AFLPA is seeking compensation in 2015 for the loss of the second bye and could see footballers granted longer end-of-season leave or days off next year.

"We understand how complex scheduling is and we know it's not a simple process," Marsh said. "We also understand the issues around the cricket World Cup early next year, but we are looking to compensate players for the loss of the second bye, which they see as crucial."
