The 23-year-old shapes as a direct replacement for Jarrad Waite who quit the Blues on Monday and appears very likely to join North Melbourne as an unrestricted free agent.

Jones, who managed just 10 games in 2014, was dropped after round 15 and never returned to the senior side.

His manager, Shane Casley, told radio station SEN that Jones needed a fresh start.

"It's fair to say Liam has been a bit frustrated this year with a lack of opportunity in the last couple of months," Casley said.

"At the end of the day, like most guys, he just wants to play senior AFL football.

"(Carlton) is certainly the club that we've nominated and we'd like to get there, but until a deal's done it's never done, is it?

"There are several clubs we've spoken to, but I think Carlton seems to be the best fit for Liam."

Casley believes a change of environment could be just what Jones needs to kickstart his career.

"He's had his struggles at the Bulldogs, he's been that sort of lone forward at times and if he gets to a club where there's an opportunity to play as that second tall forward, I think he could see his career blossom," he said.

"He's had six or seven years in the system ... at some point in your career sometimes you just need a break and a change and I think that's where Liam has got to at the moment."

Jones has managed 66 games and 68 goals in his six years at Whitten Oval.
