VicRoads said in a statement the works would largely involve shifting earth to reshape the road west of Beaufort, to make it flatter and more friendly to cars and trucks.
The biggest inconvenience to traffic is expected at the site’s main access gate, just west of Beaufort.
VicRoads said traffic controllers would work on the gate, which will be the entry and exit point for some large earth-moving machinery.
About 750,000 cubic metres of dirt will be used in the works, which are expected to be finished by the end of next March.
The Western Highway will undergo further works by the end of 2015, including duplication of the 23km stretch between Ballarat and Beaufort, a bridge over Mt Emu Creek, a bypass south of Trawalla and new intersections.
