The US media company Turner Broadcasting has confirmed it will shed 10 per cent of its workforce.

The estimated 1475 lost jobs will come from across the company's business units, including the news channel CNN, CNN International, the 'Headline News' HLN channel, cable channels TNT and TBS, and Cartoon Network.
The cuts have been announced in the wake of a new rights deal for US basketball, signed by Turner, which nearly triples the cost of exclusive TV rights paid by the company - taking it to $US1.2 billion per year.
Turner and the ESPN-ABC television group are still finalising the $US24 billion deal, over nine years, to secure the rights to America's NBA basketball.
The company says the cuts are part of a "broader effort to save money and refocus investment".
Turner currently employs around 14,000 people worldwide.
The jobs will be culled through a combination of buyouts and layoffs - the American equivalent of voluntary and involuntary redundancies.
Within the company's flagship news channel, CNN, about 130 jobs will be cut through voluntary redundancies; the remaining 170 jobs CNN is expected to shed will be cut through involuntary redundancies.
Turner's CEO John Martin told staff the cuts would affect "all levels of the company's news, entertainment, kids, young adult and sports networks and businesses."
Cuts are expected at all of the company's 18 offices worldwide.
"Those whose jobs are impacted will receive every consideration and the respect they are due, starting with severance pay for transition," he wrote in a letter to staff.
"Whatever their job title, business unit or location, they have contributed to the success story that is Turner Broadcasting, and they leave with our thanks and sincere best wishes."
The new basketball deal runs from the 2016-2017 season through to the 2024-2025 season.
That deal, according to The Hollywood Reporter, "underscores the value of live sports".
Presently the two broadcast groups pay $US485 million (ESPN-ABC) and $US445 million (Turner) per year respectively.
The new deals will increase the cost to the two companies $US1.4 billion (ESPN-ABC) and $US1.2 billion (Turner) annually.
