From ‘tinies’ to those vying for the championship trophy, 4000 competitors will take part in the Royal South Street calisthenics competition, with each performing about seven times.
Calisthenic section chairman Ron Harrington said it was a hugely popular part of South Street.
“Calisthenics has a big following and is a very popular sport,
and it’s a team effort, as far as the girls are concerned,” Mr Harrington said.
Members of clubs from across the country wil compete, including some from Western Australia and Queensland.
Mr Harrington said it was a “big event” on the circuit.
Competition opened on Sunday with the sub-juniors (7-10 years old), and saw several Ballarat clubs take to the stage.
Mr Harrington said the three- to seven-year-old girls (the ‘tinies’) competing next weekend would be a highlight.
“Her Maj should be pretty full for thatone, with the grandparents and everyone coming along,” he said.
On the opposite side end of the spectrum is the senior (16+) championship event on October 25, which Mr Harrington said was almost sold out.
“There are a few seats left, but people can always get in to the division down on the Sunday, where the quality is almost the same,” he said.
