Short, 18, will play for the Bushrangers at North Sydney Oval, given a last-minute call up to the state first XI.
Short had been playing for the second XI in a four day match, with the Bushrangers tweeting as late as 9.30am that Short would not be playing.
However, he was thrust into the side just before the match started.
Victoria won the toss and sent Queensland in to bat, with rain forecast in Sydney.
Short, a batting all-rounder, normally bats in the top order and also tweaks off-spinners.
He pursued a career in cricket despite a potential AFL career and was promoted to the Melbourne Renegades senior list earlier this month.
He also made two half centuries in Australia's under-19 side in the World Cup in 2014.
