Originally from Warrack Eagles in the Wimmera Football League, Cheney began in AFL career with Melbourne.
The Demons recruited Cheney with pick 53 in the 2007 national draft - the same year he was selected in the TAC Cup team of the year.
He made his AFL debut in 2009 and played 14 games with Demons.
Cheney was traded to Hawthorn in 2010 for a third round draft pick and managed 27 appearances with the Hawks, where he was used in ütility role, primarily in defence.
He won the Box Hill Hawks best and fairest in the VFL in 2013.
The 25-year-old joined Adelaide in the closing minutes of the trade period in a swap which also saw Hawthorn ruckman Luke Lowden traded to the Crows.
How the deal was done: Cheney and Lowden, plus picks 43, 47 and 59 traded to Adelaide for picks 31, 50 and 68.
Cheney joins fellow former North Ballarat Rebels Brad and Matt Crouch, and another Ballarat graduate Ricky Henderson at Adelaide.
