Police Association secretary Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles said while the Liberal government promised stun guns at 24-hour stations in country Victoria earlier this year, he said the pledge needed to go further and straddle both sides of politics.

"Critical incidents occur everywhere across the state, not just at 24-hour police stations in the country so the commitment needs to go further and there needs to be Tasers available for all operational police across the state," Detective Senior Sergeant Iddles said.

He said stun guns provide police with "another option" than firing a gun.

"The community at times have been critical of police when there's been a fatal police shooting so why wasn't there another option?" he said.

"This may, in certain circumstances, save a life."

A four-year trial of the weapon in Bendigo, Ballarat and Morwell finished late last year and was, Detective Senior Sergeant Iddles said, deemed successful.

The association called for 4000 stun guns, at an estimated cost of $7 million, to be held at police stations across the state.

Detective Senior Sergeant Iddles said he would have meetings with both sides of politics in the lead-up to the election.
