Mr Egeberg said Mr Whitlam would visit almost yearly.
“He and (wife) Margaret would just drop in,” he said.
“He was a personable man and someone I know the team at the Eureka Centre would always be very delighted to see.”
The visits and connection with Eureka stretch back a long way, with Mr Whitlam visiting the city in December 1973 to unveil the restored Eureka Flag at the Art Gallery.
“There was something about Gough, I found him to be extremely personable and a great intellect,” Mr Egeberg said. “The man believed in the legacy of Eureka – a fair go for all.”
