The VRI boys, who now sit atop the ladder heading into round three, clinched a two-wicket victory on home soil on Saturday.
Resuming at 2-88 on day two, Isbister brothers Reece and Lachlan continued hauling in Ballan’s 186-run total.
Reece was the mainstay, reaching 75, but departed before the mission was accomplished.
This left Jeremy Johnston (30) and Cameron Egan (5) to conjure up the winning runs before the team was bowled out for 216.
VRI captain James Nichols said the two wins this season had come against quality opposition, including last season’s premiers Lucas and now semi-finalists Ballan.
He said the feeling among the group was much better than last season, believing the improvement has come from three or four years spent playing together.
Meanwhile, Lucas claimed its first win of the season after passing Dunnstown’s 248 on Saturday.
Opener Brad Allan anchored the reigning premier’s run chase with 92 from 136 balls, while Paul Jones added 70 from 140 balls at number four as Lucas passed the target with four wickets in hand.
In other games, Buninyong’s efforts with the ball thwarted Burrumbeet’s run chase.
Resuming at 1-82 chasing the Bunnies’ 190, Burrumbeet looked set for victory, but the visitors lost 9-87 on Saturday to be bowled over for 169 – 22 runs shy of first innings points.
