A message reportedly circulating on  Facebook this week claimed "Ebola strikes Northern suburbs of Melbourne, Confirmed Case in Epping." The claim was attached to a picture of the Northern Hospital.

However, those who clicked on a link were directed to a page advising them they had been the victim of a prank, the Whittlesea Leader reported on Friday.

A Northern Health spokeswoman confirmed to Fairfax Media there had been no reported cases of Ebola at the hospital.

"If a case of Ebola should be suspected and detected within Northern Health, we are prepared," the spokeswoman said.

In an unrelated scare on Thursday, paramedics dressed in protective suits transported a Docklands man complaining of headache, nausea and fever, to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Although some media were fast to report the man was a suspected Ebola case who had recently returned from Africa, Ambulance Victoria said the man was being treated for an infection and was not suspected of carrying the deadly virus.
