The 2014-15 season-opening sailed into action with the ceremonial firing of the cannon on Saturday.
Fourteen yachts braved the blustery conditions to take part in the first race around Lake Wendouree, with several BYC members taking an icy swim as only two teams completed the race.
Ballaarat Yacht Club commodore Lesley Davies was present for Nick Smith's launching of the cannon.
Davies' speech to members outlined the goals of a recently devised strategic planning process for the club, as it aims for more integration with the wider Ballarat public.
"Rather than talk about the past, I want to focus on the future," Davies said.
"The future of yacht clubs is not solely about competition but with more emphasis on social sailing and community inclusion.
"We are implementing this with discover sailing days, tackers days (teaching juniors to sail) sailability (schools sailing and sailing for all abilities), Thursday night twilight social sailing and an emphasis on creating a more family friendly environment."
The club will host a discover sailing day on November 30 from 10am to 4pm.
Meanwhile, the BYC's pennant season has swung into action with an opening race of 16 yachts and about 30 sailors.
Davies also said the club looked to build on infrastructure.
"Our continued growth has prompted our major project, which is to provide improved facilities for both members and guests, a separate member's area, extended boat jetties, moorings and boat storage," she said.
"We also have the unique opportunity and obligation to see Valdera our 1932, 25-footer restored and taking its place as our flagship."
