MANY Victorian childhoods crossed paths with Ballarat’s Royal South Street Competitions at some point or another.
And even if you didn’t take to the stage at South Street, your brother/sister/cousin/ neighbour or great Aunty Norah certainly did.
Now in its 123rd year, South Street is Australia’s foremost eisteddfod and runs from July to November each year, with Her Majesty’s Theatre being the main venue for events.
It covers 14 theatrical disciplines of voice, music, and movements.
Last year’s competition attracted more than 10,000 competitors, resulting in more than 40,000 onstage appearances.
Well-known names to have graced the South Street stage include James Scullin, Alfred Deakin, Mary Grant Bruce, Amy Castles, Joan Kirner, Denise Drysdale, Betty Pounder, David Atkins, Robert Lempke and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
