Hocking is preparing to lead a star sporting team in the Ironman 70.3 Ballarat, taking up the 1.9km swim.
Three-time Olympic rowing champion Drew Ginn will be in the saddle for the 90km bike leg with hometown hero and 1994 Commonwealth Games marathon champion Steve Moneghetti to round out their race in the 21.1km run.
Hocking's gold in Glasgow this year was a breakthrough win after the top of the podium had eluded her for six years in major international competition.
Her golden race was a stunning revival after Hocking was dead-last at the 50m turn and then stormed home to win by two body lengths from teammate Emily Seebohm.
Hocking had claimed bronze to Seebohm in the 100m 24 hours earlier.
The 24-year-old Victorian competed in triathlons until dislocating her knee 10 years ago and admitted she was a bit edgy at the prospect of swimming the 1.9km distance.
"I haven't done a lot of open water swims, so I'm a bit nervous," Hocking said. "After the Pan Pacific Championships (in August) this year I had some injections in my shoulder so fitness is a concern at the moment."
Ginn made his name as a rower but the Australian rowing head coach is a former Oceania cycling time trial champion and relished the prospect of competing in Ballarat.
"It's been an aim of mine to stay active after competing as an athlete, so that I am fit enough to be ready to push and ride as fast as I can for the team," he said .
Moneghetti, 52, remains in strong form having clocked 69 minutes, 43 seconds for the Melbourne half-marathon in October .
"The bonus is to have Bindy (Hocking) and Drew on the first two legs, which will allow me to have a casual stroll on the run, because by my leg we will be so far in front," Moneghetti said.
The trio has teamed up for the KIDS Foundation, a charity dedicated to injury prevention and recovery.
