He said, in the end, it was an easy decision to come home to North Ballarat Roosters - a club where he became a triple VFL premiership player, JJ Liston medallist, state representative and was named in the VFL team of the year four times.
Sewell's signing was unveiled to teammates in a low-key training session at Eureka Stadium on Wednesday night.
This marks the second major homecoming and signing for the Selkirk Roosters for season 2015.
Triple premiership ruckman Orren Stephenson signed with the Roosters last month after three seasons in the AFL.
Sewell took a season's hiatus to travel overseas for six months.
"I always wanted to come back and play VFL but living and working in Melbourne now, I wasn't sure where I'd end up," Sewell said.
"I've got a lot of great friends and good relationships here, so it was an easy decision in the end to come home.
"Certainly to play under Big O (Stephenson) again will be a bit of a thrill, so I'm looking forward to that."
Sewell, aged 26, has a new job as a land surveyor in Port Melbourne and will primarily work on an individualised training regime, coming back to Ballarat for a midweek team session.
He has combined living and studying in Melbourne with the Roosters before and said the club put a lot of faith and trust in him to ensure he was primed for match day.
Roosters coach Gerard FitzGerald said the club worked to create an environment and strategies to adapt to players' lifestyles, which helped in drawing Sewell and father-of-three Stephenson back.
"We want to help manage time and circumstances," FitzGerald said.
"Myles is a very highly committed player and very disciplined as well as being a very good player.
"He has the attributes and behaviour to do well and be a good player for us from a distance.
"...We're thrilled Myles wants to come home."
Sewell returned to Australia mid-year and played alongside his brother Adam, a senior assistant at Ballarat Swans, helping the club to the Ballarat Football League grand final.
It was a chance to get his touch back and enjoy the game at grassroots level.
"I loved my time at the Swans and am grateful to the club for letting me run around for a few weeks with them," Sewell said.
"It was great to go back and play a few games with (Adam) and we couldn't quite win the flag on the day but that's the way it goes."
The Roosters have launched a gruelling six-week pre-season campaign for a training squad of 50 players before the Christmas break.
