The $254 million cut to the ABC budget has sounded a death knell for the public broadcaster's W-League coverage, with the organisation to cease televising the national women's football league from next season.

The Football Federation of Australia announced the ABC's decision following the federal government's widespread budget cuts on public broadcasting. The decision does not affect the schedule for the current season and is part of ABC's end to broadcasting other live sports.
"FFA is disappointed with the decision to cut the broadcast of Australia's premier women's national sporting competition," an FFA spokesman said.
"The decision does not affect broadcast of the current Westfield W-League season or the ongoing viability of the competition and FFA will work with all broadcasters to explore options to ensure the ongoing coverage of the W-League."
The ABC will still show the 2015 Asian Cup whose rights they purchased from Fox Sports after reportedly receiving financial assistance from the FFA for the bid.
